The single most common planning mistake in Kashmir is reading distances off a map. Fifty kilometres of mountain road with convoy traffic and a market town in the middle is a two-hour drive, not a forty-minute one. Here is what to actually budget.
Srinagar to Gulmarg
Around 50 km, and roughly two hours each way in good conditions. The climb starts at Tangmarg and is slow. In winter the final stretch may require chains or a transfer to a local vehicle. As a day trip this works, but it is a long day once you add the gondola queue.
Srinagar to Pahalgam
Around 90 km and two and a half to three hours. The road runs through Anantnag and a series of busy market towns where traffic bunches badly. Doing Pahalgam as a day trip is possible but wasteful — the Betaab and Aru valleys beyond it need their own half-day, so stay overnight.
Srinagar to Sonamarg
Around 80 km and two and a half to three hours, on the highway towards Ladakh. This road carries heavy commercial and military traffic and can stop entirely for convoys. Sonamarg closes in winter when the pass beyond it shuts. Thajiwas glacier is a short pony ride or walk from the town.
Srinagar to Doodhpathri and Yusmarg
Both are around two hours west, both are genuine day trips, and neither has meaningful infrastructure. Take food. These are the two easiest escapes from the standard circuit.
Sequencing a week
Do not attempt Gulmarg and Pahalgam on consecutive days from a Srinagar base — you will spend ten hours in a car. Base in Srinagar for Gulmarg and Sonamarg, then relocate to Pahalgam for two nights and cover the southern valleys from there. Return to Srinagar the night before flying, because morning road conditions are unpredictable and airport security is slow.
Booking transport
Hiring one driver for the full trip is almost always cheaper and less stressful than arranging each leg. Agree the total, the itinerary and what happens on a weather day before you set off.
