Culture & Heritage of Kashmir

The people of Kashmir are known for their warmth and hospitality. Traditional attire such as the pheran (a long woolen gown) is still widely worn, especially during winters. Social gatherings are incomplete without sharing Kahwa (traditional saffron tea) and the famed Wazwan, a multi-course meal that is an essential part of Kashmiri culture.

Kashmir celebrates a diverse mix of festivals such as Eid, Navroz, Diwali, Baisakhi, and the unique Tulip Festival. These events highlight the harmony and diversity of the valley’s communities and traditions.

Kashmiri artisans are world-famous for their exquisite Pashmina shawls, papier-mâché, walnut wood carvings,and hand-knotted carpets. These crafts represent centuries-old skills passed down through generations and remain a cornerstone of Kashmiri identity.

Traditional Kashmiri music like Sufiana Kalam and folk songs such as Rouf and Chakri embody the region’s spiritual and cultural essence. Dance forms like Rouf, performed during festivals, symbolize joy and togetherness.

The valley boasts a remarkable historical legacy with ancient temples like Martand Sun Temple, Mughal gardens such as Shalimar Bagh, and Sufi shrines including Hazratbal and Charar-e-Sharif. These landmarks reflect the confluence of Hindu, Mughal, and Islamic influences that shaped Kashmiri history.
